CUBA

Since 2000, Tonyaa has been reporting on Cuba - a nation that she has visited 14 times as a journalist. She has met with various officials - such as Ricardo Alarcon, head of Cuba's National Assembly, and Josefina Vidal, head of the Cuban Foreign Ministry's North American Affairs Division. Tonyaa's research and reporting primarily focuses on the impact of the U.S. embargo on the Cuban economy and its impact on average Cubans, Cuban innovations in education, the arts, sustainable living, and Afro-Cuban influences. Tonyaa is currently working on a book about her experiences in Cuba and the diaspora ties that bind Americans to Cubans and the Caribbean.

CUBA BEYOND POLITICS

During Tonyaa's visits to Cuba, she got a unique look at the people and the culture of the island outside of the prism of the embargo and Cold War politics. Among the results was learning about the work of Gloria Rolando, an Afro-Cuban documentary producer whose work focuses on race in Cuba, visits to schools where youths learn the arts in makeshift conditions and artists produce works with scarce materials.
