Since 2000, Tonyaa has done journalistic work in Haiti, Grenada, Venezuela and Barbados. Her main country of research, however, has been Cuba - a country where the last prisoners of the Cold War exist - and most of whom happen to be Black. Her columns in The Florida Times-Union and on The Root examine the impact of the U.S. embargo outside of the prism of U.S. interests and Cuba's successes in spite of it. Tonyaa's articles for Morgan State University's School of Global Journalism and Communication's Morgan Journalism Review and research on Academia.com explore issues of race in Cuba, the links between Afro-Cubans and African-Americans and Cuba's role in the development of Africa, Latin America and the global South. She is currently working on a book about her experiences in Cuba and lessons for a new age.
