Speaking on journalism is especially fulfilling when I can share what I learned on a reporting trip to some distant place - and how I learned it - instead of just talking about what I did.

In 1997, I took my journalistic experience into the classroom as
an adjunct journalism instructor at the University of North Florida in
Jacksonville.

 Since that time I've:
  •  Served as a professional-in-residence at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
  • Taught journalism workshops at Delaware State University in Dover, and at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.
  • Speak frequently on demographics and disparities, and on the value of journalists getting out of their comfort zones so that they can cover various communities with a stronger sense of context and fairness - something that I learned from my travels.
